I believe that the status of the fetus is a critically important bearing that should be considered for a woman wanting to perform an abortion. In answering this question, it is first vital to determine when life begins. Whereas there is a school of thought that asserts that life begins at birth, I believe that it actually starts at conception. As a result, the mother has both a legal and a moral obligation to the child. Performing an abortion would not only amount to neglecting the status of the child but also committing outright murder. Morally, the expectant woman would have denied an innocent person the right to live. Furthermore, it is wrong to destroy potential human life. Ethically, life should be held in the highest dignity, and as such, failure to consider the status of the fetus goes against this important tenet. However, this does not mean that abortion is absolutely wrong. There are several instances when the status of the fetus would be ignored. For example, if abortion is the only way to save the life of the mother, then the status of the baby will be ignored. Secondly, if the baby has been proven to have several undesirable traits that would only bring distress, it would be essential to terminate the pregnancy. However, when both the fetus and the mother are healthy, it would be imperative to treat the former as a human being with all the necessary characteristics to have a meaningful life on earth.
