Nursing is the practice of providing care to the patients and people who need such services in the society. A nurse is a caregiver who acts as a patient advocate and protect their rights by ensuring that they are well taken care of. Nurses play a great role in the clinics and hospitals as they act as a link between the patients and the doctors while providing care and meeting the needs of the patients ( Wilkes, Cowin & Johnson, 2015 ). I understand nursing as a practice of providing care for the people who need such care in health care facilities. By being there with the patients throughout, nurses’ roles within the health care sector cannot be underestimated.
I chose the nursing profession because it is a career that involves making a difference in the lives of people. Nursing helps save lives, bring happiness and provide comfort to patients who are in need of care ( Démeh & Rosengren, 2015 ). Ranging from mental health, caring for the aged and moving to rehabilitation and other kinds of care, nursing entails creating a positive impact in the lives of people. Since my childhood, I have been a compassionate, strong-valued person who always has the urge to help others. Because of the willingness to help others and see them get happy again, I chose the nursing profession because it is a practice that allows me to accomplish what I loved as a child. Even though nursing practice comes with a lot of challenges, there can be nothing more comforting and satisfying in life than to help people battling with their lives get well and go back to happiness. It brings inner happiness and satisfaction by helping other people and saving lives.

Nursing also provides an opportunity for endless learning where one continues to learn throughout the career life. Even though all jobs are challenging, the rewards and demands of nursing can usually vary depending on the work setting. Nursing work in a very diverse and complex environment where they meet a new variety of challenges in their daily work ( Chang et al., 2015 ). These challenges offer a great opportunity to for one to learn and continue to grow in the career. Learning and meeting new challenges has been my dream since childhood and because nursing can provide this opportunity, I decided to choose the nursing profession. It is exciting to meet new experience and learn new things every day, an opportunity that is the nursing profession offers. The influence to choose the nursing profession was also initiated by the career mobility that nursing offers to the nurses. Unlike other professions which are a bit rigid, nursing offers an opportunity to work in different places and a variety of areas. The registered nurses and nurse practitioners can work in a variety of places. It can be in the public health, community health or even nurse educator. A nurse is mobile because they can work in a variety of places thus offering sufficient flexibility. The career diversity that is provided by the nursing profession can be so interesting to the nurse because one chooses to work in the area of interest. A nurse can choose to work with elderly people, helping the injured or even rehabilitation. This career diversity opportunity provided by the nursing profession has always impressed me thus leading to my decision to choose to nurse.
One thing that I have loved about the nursing profession is because it offers a healthy work-life balance. Nurses usually work in shifts, and one can choose a shift which he/she feels suitable. The schedule is flexible due to the opportunity to work in either day or night shift whichever is suitable. Unlike other professions where there is limited flexibility in the work schedule, nurses can choose a shift that they are comfortable with thus offering job satisfaction ( Chang, 2015 ). Another thing that I like about nursing is that it can lead to inspiration. Working in an emergency room or with the cancer patients can come with a lot of tragedies. However, seeing cancer survivors or people get out of emergency rooms alive and happy can be so inspiring. Happiness comes in when patients who are critically ill getting well and leave for home happily. The happiness of nurses is to see the patients they were taking care of getting well.
Nursing profession also provides leadership opportunities for nurses who get become nurse leaders. Nursing leadership is an important component of the delivery of care to patients. One can get the leadership skills so fast into the profession thus increasing the chances of career development. At the same time, there is always the demand of nurses in the United States hence very minimal chances that a person may complete nursing and fail to secure jobs. Currently, there is a shortage of nurses as the patient/nurse ration continue to rise. It is a profession that is in demand, and the reason for choosing it is due to the scarcity of nurses to care for the ever-growing number of patients.
However, there are a few things that can be traumatizing about being a nurse. Despite my passion for helping people and saving lives, it can be so challenging to work as a caregiver with critically ill patients. The feeling of seeing a person undergo a lot of pain and eventually die can leave a long-lasting bad memory on the mind of a nurse. While it requires one to remain compassionate, it also needs a strong and brave heart.
