Legalism is a philosophical belief system of ancient China whose principles apply to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic. I think it would best handle the circumstances of the current adverse situation given the emphasis of order over everything. Putting the spread of the virus in check requires strict adherence to the health protocols.

Legalism best applies to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, which changed societal behavior with strict adherence to the health professionals' measures exuding the philosophical belief system's principles. According to Hansen & Curtis (2013), Legalism posits three main branches, 'Fa' 'Shi' and 'Shu', that posits public written law, power, and irrelevance of human nature alongside morality. It suggests a highly efficient and powerful government as the fundamental requirement for social order (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2019). The prevailing COVID-19 pandemic requires strict adherence to public health protocols like social distancing, staying at home, and frequent sanitization; furthermore, they go against various social rights like freedom of movement. Human nature is susceptible to the right under the current circumstances. By emphasizing order over everything, Legalism would best handle the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic with payout involving putting the virus in check by subjecting individuals to adhere to laid-down measures by authorities strictly.

The Chinese philosophical belief system, Legalism, posits order under its three principles. It would best handle the COVID-19 adverse effects by subjecting people to obey health professional measures to contain the spread. It exudes confidence in powerful public health authorities to manage the current adversity.

Response to Spencer Langston

Indeed, COVID-19 pandemic changed the basic structure of humanity. Confucius posits “do unto others what you want to be done unto you,” however, people have not learned how to place others first for a country’s wellbeing; instead, everyone is wary about themselves and their health, which translates to the general picture. I am afraid I have to disagree that the Confucian belief system would thrive in the current pandemic. Indeed, it pushes for unity in a family; however, the contemporary adversity argues for individualism (social distancing) regardless of close relations. People have no obligation trusting on others than themselves to avoid contracting the virus. The ideals fronted by Confucian therein makes it not the best for the current situation.
