Case Study 1

Aging has significant implications for breathing anatomy and physiology. The changes to the lung tissue and muscles near Mrs. Chewning’s means that her airways cannot remain completely opened. As such, the airways tend to close easily. Aging has been implicated in the morphology of their air sacs making them loose and baggy (Robnett, Brossoie, Chop, 2020).

From the description, Mrs. Chewning has a history of asthma and recently diagnosed with chronic bronchitis. Other than the anatomical changes in her lungs, chronic bronchitis means that her lung cells and tissues have undergone inflammation. Therefore, this affects the contraction of the muscles, a process responsible for clearing out the lungs.

Mrs. Chewning is at an increased risk of acquiring pneumonia. Some of the risk factors associated with pneumonia include a history of smoking, structural lung problems, and asthma, among others. The patient has asthma, history of smoking, and also possesses structural issues with the lungs.

Case Study 2

Mrs. Winnie is suffering from dysphagia. Dysphagia is a medical term used for describing swallowing problems. Whereas some people have problems swallowing only certain foods, some cannot swallow anything at all (Robnett, Brossoie, Chop, 2020).

Aging is one of the well-documented risk factors associated with dysphagia. As a 740year0old, she has experienced significant wear and tear in her nervous and muscular systems, thus affecting the functions of her soft tissues. Evidence has also drawn a close relationship between hypertension and dysphagia. Hypertension of the esophageal sphincter characterized by achalasia leads to dysphagia due to the poor relaxation of the sphincteric muscle.

It is vital that Mrs. Winnie is taken to the hospital for immediate therapy. Dysphagia means that the patient cannot eat as required. Therefore, they risk suffering from malnutrition and dehydration. Evidence has also shown that the condition is treatable using techniques such as swallowing therapy.
