The movie Harriet depicts scenes from a time in the United States history about 1812–1865. It seeks to address and capture abolitionist movements, through the bravery, courage and events in the life of Harriet Tubman. The events largely base on slavery; forced labour, and inferior economic and social status. The movie portrays Harriet as a heroine role model and a person who fights for human rights and freedom of people of her race from slavery. Through her life’s circumstances, we are exposed to the larger picture of economic struggles, right violations of people of colour, (African-Americans), and a birth of a quest and desire for revolution. From the movie, we gather some critical themes of idealism, liberation after oppression, slavery and a revolution aimed at abolitionism in their society back then.

Harriet (the movie) addresses some key political events, especially in the United States history. It unfolds the vital events and causes that led to the uprising by African American slaves becoming abolitionists and later galvanizing the American civil war. From the movie, the escape of Harriet walking for a hundred miles and later coming back to lead the rest of the enslaved people to freedom represents a political awakening of the United States had in 1861. It brought about a division between the free slavery states and those considered pro-slavery to consider equality of men

Political ideology is also born when Harriet is responsible for moulding a public opinion with a specific aim at slavery, and economic suffrage. The focus is on the plight of African American labourers with no human rights and forced labour with minimal or no pay. From this, we find the overwhelming theme of liberation when she goes to lead her fellow captives to rescue despite the existence of harsh pro-slavery laws and equally inhumane white slave owners.

We learn vital lessons from the Harriet film with regard to politics and government. The ability to marshal support and the acceptance of the endorsement by a specific populous comes with responsibility. The responsibility is to honestly protect the interests of the people and being true to the course. We also learn that we should embrace the politics of vision. For Harriet, the vision was to see her people free from slavery and oppression.

Conclusively, I would highly recommend the movie as it is a captivating way to traverse events in history. A movie teaches a lot of ethics and morals. It is a depiction of the evolution of society and helps one appreciate steps made in fighting for human rights and equality. It is a movie that can be watched by the whole family, a film that not only entertains but also captures the imagination, and offers a peek in history through the eyes and life events of Harriet.
