Nursing is one of the largest professions in the world with over 4 million nurses working in the U.S alone. Therefore, they should be more involved in political matters that affect their patients and their profession. It is their moral obligation to do so. Unfortunately, throughout history, nurses have not been much involved in legislation as expected. A part of the huge legacy of healthcare is because of political involvement. This involvement allows for safe healthcare that is of high quality, accessible and affordable (Jackson, 2015) .

Various reasons should push nurses to be actively involved in politics. Politics change a lot of the work nurses do. Current legislation on texting and driving in Canada has reduced the number of accidents that happen on the roads. This translates to fewer ICU admissions and fewer fatalities. Through politics, nurses can present the grievances of the nursing profession. In the past, there have been issues such as wage freezing, working without contract and decreased hospital funding (Brokaw, 2016) . When nurses vote, they get to choose leaders who can make better budgeting decisions and support their job security. Through political involvement, nurses also get to advocate for better healthcare for their patients. When nurses work in clinics or hospitals, they can help one patient at a time. However, when they vote or sign a petition, they help thousands of people at a go. For example, when funding for refugee healthcare was cut in Canada, people from the medical docket took the case to the Supreme Court of Canada and the decision was overturned (Brokaw, 2016) .

Implications are evident when nurses fail to participate fully in political processes. They remain at risk of being neglected by the government. For example, they can be subjected to deplorable working conditions. In addition, nurses may face wage cuts and inadequate funding since they have no one to advocate for their rights. This may lead to poor healthcare, and eventually more deaths will be witnessed due to inability of combating new diseases and infections. References
