Power is the ability to control and transform human life. According to Foucault, power is everywhere and utilizes knowledge to show that authority is instituted by forms of knowledge that are acceptable. Furthermore, human science has evolved intending to know everything possible about human experiences. Similarly, various fields such as medical, biological, sociological, and psychological have been investing much effort in inquiring about human behavior. Moreover, in every area, people undergo training continuously to research human experiences scientifically, and this leads to problematizing almost everything people do. Therefore people tend to pose a question on every action they take. The more human scientists make discoveries, the more they create anxiety upon humans on things they would not have even thought about them if it were not for the knowledge brought by science. Foucault is trying to draw a point that human science is considerably being pushed to scrutinize human life so that it feels natural or logical. Still, in the real sense, the force behind it is the “unseen power” controlling humans.
Power is possessed by individuals in society, especially the ones with the capacity to control mass media outlets. Mass media can interfere with cultural processes on human consciousness. Also, powerful economic and political groups control cultural outlets like radio, television, social media, and print media, which advertises their interests with the intension of manipulating the audience to accept their products or services. Therefore manipulation of human consciousness by distorting communication processes shows that power is bestowed upon social groups since they can impose their own will to the people by manipulating their culture. If the groups who have a significant influence in controlling various cultures through manipulation are willing to change the world for the better, then perhaps the world will indeed change for the better.
