Films have become an important part of modern-day society. Films are done to educate, entertain and to depict the different human aspects of life. One of the shows that has caught my attention in the past few years is Power. Power is a film made of short episodes in every season. The series has six seasons. On this essay, the aim is to review the show power from a personal perspective.

The show Power demonstrates a big, complicated and meaningful story of a man who has power, perils and challenges that comes from that power and how to deal with them. James St. Patrick, who goes by the name Ghost is a drug lord who sets a night club as a legit business to hide his criminal life. St. Patrick’s aim is to balance the criminal life with that of a legit business owner to avoid being captured by the police. In addition, Ghost is trying hard to save his marriage which seems to have hit rock bottom. St. Patrick remains anonymous to the police and that is the origin of his name Ghost.

The show power is worth watching for the reasons that it educates and also entertains. The show educates the audience on different elements such as the reason to avoid criminal life, the importance of friendship and family, the dangerous world of crime and the prize one has to pay for criminal activities. Ghost and his life-long friend and business partner Tommy Egan live on the edge and in fear that their lives are in danger from other gangs. ‘Ghost’ puts his family in harms way when the police and other criminal groups start looking for him. In season 1, Ghost successfully dupes the police that he is a legitimate businessman who owns a nightclub. The show also entertains with drama scenes. In Season 1, Ghost St. Patrick relationship with his wife Tasha experiences a turbulent time and every time they are together it is drama as they exchange words. In season 2, St. Patrick starts cheating on his wife with a longtime friend Angela Valdes who is working undercover for the police. Later Angela Valdes solves the myth of Ghost but she cannot turn him in because she is in an affair with him. The turn and twist of events and suspension keep the viewer wanting more.

The show has gained popularity among its viewers. Power also has acquired critical acclaim in the audience for its writing, directing, acting and atmosphere. The writing of the show begins with the basic flow and narrative of the background and previous life of the main character before it gets to the current situation. The actors are talented which makes acting more compelling to the viewers. Currently Power is being aired on Starz channel at 8: 00 p.m. ET. The show belongs to Starz as it is a TV channel for general population and it airs films. However, because of the adult content and violence, it should not be aired at 8:00 p.m. Power is accurately rated since the rating depends on the viewers.

For drama loving audience, the show Power creates passion, interest, and enthusiasm to the viewers. The audience for the show is anyone above 16 years of age who is interested in crime drama shows. The reason why the show is recommended for anyone who is beyond 16 is that it contains adult content and a lot of violent scenes that flow with the story.

The scenes, characters and the concepts of the show can be explained through philosophical concepts such as Marxism and psychoanalytic approaches. The show follows a Marxist concept where materialistic interpretation can be used to view social conflict and class relations. For example, Ghost wants to stop associating with people who engage with illegal businesses such as drug peddling and begins to relate to legitimate business people. It is an approach he uses to disguise his criminal character to avoid an arrest by the police. Also, ghost and all other drug lords in the show are capitalists in that they use their employees to acquire more money from illegal businesses. Workers risk their lives by engaging in criminal activities. The show can be explained in a psychological approach using social class cues. The film simply tells us who the characters are according to the people they relate with or to. From the film we can be able to classify each of the characters as either a criminal or a good person from their social class behaviors. For example, Ghost does not want to associate with people who were previously his business partners just because he is bailing out of the drug business.
