Direct patient care goal is spending the most time with ill persons, to prevent, investigate and treat their health problems, and to alleviate their suffering. During this process forming or restoring a firm physician-patient relationship is essential.
First Hour
I chose to provide direct patient care to an athletic patient that had developed back problems due to heavy workout routines, among other reasons. So, I began by familiarizing myself with his health challenges by attending a team meeting, where I discussed his needs with previous caregivers and physicians. This meeting took thirty minutes in the absence of the patient and his family.

In the next thirty minutes, I introduced myself to the patient. I had a friendly conversation with him to get to know his character and establish a positive attitude towards me.
Second hour
In the next hour, I focussed on discussing the patient’s condition with him and his family. He was at ease, and so disclosed his work out schedules, passion for sports, and his obsession with staying fit. This information provided a better insight into how he developed back pains. I explained what could have caused his issues in detail to educate all concerned parties on his condition using verbal communication and written instructions. I also encouraged them to ask questions freely to improve their understanding.
Third hour
Once the patient and family members understood the condition, they were ready to take the necessary steps to improve the patient's condition. Therefore, I explained how best to propel healing and avoid more complicated back problems in the future. I taught the family the best way to provide care through a home exercise program and gave instructions about movements to avoid the risk of falls.
As the clinical hours came to an end, I informed all parties that I would screen his favorite fitness centre in the next clinical review, to prevent injury once he began exercising again.
