The Second World War was a distressing war that went on for about six years; from late 1939 to late 1945. This war was between the Axis Powers and their cronies. Germany, Japan, and Italy majorly spearheaded this battle. The allies to this war were Russia, France, and Britain. Even though history says that the battle started when Britain and France stated war on Germany from the invasion of Germany on Poland, what caused the war is more convoluted. The aim of this paper is to discuss what caused the Word War II and in particular the main cause of the war.

The leading causes of World War II are mainly divided into two categories, the short and the long term causes. The long term causes of the Second World War were The Great Depression, the rise of dictators across the globe including Hitler, and restitution on Germany from the Treaty of Versailles ( Hardyman, 2017) . The short term causes of the war were quite a number. These causes include invasion to Manchuria by Japan, invasion to Ethiopia by Italy, invasion to Poland by Germany, the attack at Pearl Harbor, and the fall of the League of Nations amongst others.

Considering the many causes that led to World War II, the one event that irretrievably led the world to war more than any other event was The Great Depression of the early 1930s. A decade before the world war started, the world had been experiencing a devastating downturn on the economy. This event is what was termed as the Great Depression. Raise in Japans' poverty levels and mass unemployment in Germany angered most citizens ( Williams and Adams, 2017) . As a result, there was a rise of dictatorial governments that vowed to protect its citizens from the economic disaster that they were facing. These dictatorial governments made it acceptable for counties to breach and loot other countries of their resources, power, and territories

Most dictators, Hitler included, became devious by directing their citizen's hatred and anger towards other countries, and as a result, they looted whatever they could from their neighboring countries. Hate and resentment were the primary tools the government used to control their citizens from the promises of better lives and jobs for everyone. In addition, even though not at the start of the war, the bombing of the Pearls Harbor by the Japanese also played a huge role in the war. The United States later on retaliated by declaring war on Japan. Italy and Germany in solidarity with Japan pronounced war on the United States as a result of the retaliation, and that is how the United States became part of the Second World War, the largest war in the history of mankind.
