Integrated Circuit (IC) temperature sensors have played a key role in modern and past usage among the major sensors, due to their specific characteristics and properties. As noted by Bakker and Huijsing (2011), IC temperature sensors research kicked off in the 1970s, with Smartec Company being the first producing SMT160 sensor with the duty-cycle output. The paper focuses three IC temperature sensors; the 837T, ADT7410 and TMP05 Sensors.

Rockwell Automation manufactures the 837T Display Temperature Sensor. Rockwell Automation, headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, and sold under the brand name Allen-Bradley. The 837T comes in two models of digital as well as none-digital one, which is an analog model. With the full range of option, Rockwell Automation gives buyers the opportunity in choosing the best models for use based on the need. The 837T Sensor comprises ranges of -20 to as high as 80° C. For more flexibility, the sensor’s housing able to rotate for 320° while the head can rotate at 330°. Likewise, for convenience and diversity in selection, Rockwell Automation manufactures the sensors in lengths ranging from 25 to as much as 350 mm, which is excellent for selecting preferred options. The 837T also comes in Dual PNP and form of PNP +Analog, with the power usage of various 837T models ranges from 4 mA to as high as 20 mA.

The 837T is used in automotive for the monitoring temperatures of welding coolants, in discrete batches for monitoring the process temperatures, in the food and beverages industry for measuring hygienic temperatures in the pipes and vessels (Rockwell Automation, 2018).

The other two IC temperature sensors are and ADT7410 and TMP05 Sensors manufactured by Analog Devices, with its head offices in Norwood, Massachusetts. The ADT7410 has a ±0.5°C temperature accuracy under −40°C to +105°C when operating between 2.7-3.6 V. Moreover, for temperatures of −40°C to highs of +105°C, i.e., 3.0 V, there is an accuracy level of ±0.4°C. Additionally, of the various benefits, Rockwell Automation (2018), says the sensor is easy to implement and does not need temperature calibration or correcting by the various users. Also, has a wider range of temperature of between −55°C to that of +150°C, with a range of 2.7 - 5.5 V.

Uses of ADT7410 sensors are used in environmental control systems, medical equipment, thermal protection, in computer thermal monitoring, in industries for process controls, in monitors of power systems and also in hand-held devices applications (Rockwell Automation, 2018).

The TMP05, also manufactured by Analog Devices is a digital IC temperature sensor that is modulated digitally, for ensuring that the output works proportionally to the temperature. As a sensor, the TMP05 has an accuracy of ± 0.5°C in temperatures at 25°C, while at temperatures from 0°C to 70°C, it has an accuracy level of ±1.0°C. Additionally, as a well-manufactured sensor, the TMP05 can operate in temperatures of −40°C to as far as +150°C, which is within the most IC temperature sensors. Also, the TMP05 operates within a voltage of 3-5.5 V, with a power consumption level of 70 μW when it is in maximum operation at 3.3 V. On another perspective, the TMP05 and the ADT71040 are manufactured under RoHS compliance, i.e., Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, ensuring products are safe and contains no hazardous substances. Likewise, Rockwell Automation (2018), says costs are flexible ranging from $0.72 to $0.99.

The TMP05 use areas are in isolated sensors, used in environment controlling systems, thermal monitoring as well as thermal protection in computers, industry processes controls and finally in power systems monitors (Analog Devices, 2018). There are also other general uses of IC sensors in multiple avenues. Bakker and Huijsing (2011) and Yadav et al. (2012), mention use in circuit boards for monitoring and controlling of temperatures, in controlling CPU temperatures in computers and telecommunication apps in phones or PDAs. Analog Devices and Rockwell Automation make the sensors in varying sizes for flexibility, hence increasing the range of usage.
