Deterrence is whereby we avert yet to come crimes by terrifying either the defendant or the municipal. There are two type of deterrence namely detailed and general deterrence. Detailed deterrence relates to any personality defendant whereas all-purpose deterrence is applied to the public collectively. Restoration, on the other hand, highlights the damage done to victims of criminalities and entails offenders engaging in financial restoration and community service to pay back the victim and the community with the aim of ‘restoring them.’
A fine as a specific sentence, reflects on restoration as a mode of punishment as it entails monetary restoration to the victims, be it the government or another party. A fine is considered hugely before being used as a sentence, the financial status of the defendant is brought into question here. It is mostly used with an alteration, or a different sentence attached if one cannot pay the fine. Death is a serious sentence. One that is feared by both the public and the defendant and even not available in several judicial systems. Death is feared by many individuals and is thus used as general deterrence. It scares the public from repeating the same crime.

Deterrence, according to me, is hugely successful in reduction and prevention of crime. The death sentence for example, makes people afraid of being caught on the wrong side of the law (murder cases). This prevents murders and makes people more cooperative in solving of personal differences too. Restoration though, is not at all efficient. How does paying a fine make you change? It might, but what if your pockets are overflowing with cash? What if somebody pays your fine as a favor to you? What if you gamble, win some cash and pay off the debt? In no way does paying a fine equal serving time. Not at all. I actually believe, that fines should even be scratched from legal systems around the world.
