Dr. Chew's fourth video describes useful college study as a study that requires a desire to learn and sufficient time and effort devotion through using appropriate learning strategies such as learning optimization principles (Chew, 2011). It is depicted that failure to use inappropriate learning strategies can make studies to be long and hard, thus many shortcomings. Therefore, the video reveals that for one to utilize the principles for optimizing learning, one is required to have three studying tips to have a deeper understanding of topics they are studying (Learning, 2019). The first principle is based on question generation, whereby students are required to generate questions as they read. The questions are supposed to focus on analysis, comparison, and contrast of the information in question.

Another principle is based on the development of a concept map that does not need to be necessarily picture perfect. A concept map allows students to write the study topics down — this aids students in developing a deeper understanding of the information at hand (Palumbo, 2012). The last principle has two parts, including practice retrieving information in the absence of notes and adequately practice the use of information. This principle outlines the need for students to make efforts to retrieve information in the absence of their notes and practice using the information in multiple alternatives such as short answer and essay situations (Palumbo, 2012). In the video, the importance of taking notes is discussed. Dr. Chew gives suggestions students should make it a practice to take notes by hand. This helps them to avoid copying and pasting an entire lecture and getting off-topic through the internet (Chew, 2011). He advises that students should write essential concepts that have thought put into them instead of writing every word of the lecture presentation.

Dr. Chew also discourages students from copying a classmate's notes (Chew, 2011). He says that the practice is less effective when compared to coming to class and taking notes themselves. Furthermore, he stresses the importance of highlighting. According to him, highlighting key concepts and rereading the material multiple times is another appropriate learning methodology. Besides, group studying is also another learning methodology whose effectiveness depends on some basic rules (Learning, 2019). This includes the proper setting of group goals and agendas and criteria for involvement, keeping the purpose of learning on the participants' minds, and allowing all members to ask and answer questions in expressing group understanding (Palumbo, 2012). Generally, diving deeper into the material that one is studying is vital before beginning using Dr. Chew's principles for optimizing learning.
