QSEN Core Competencies

Patient-centered care refers to health services that focus on the patient’s needs. Teamwork and collaboration refer to the continued and interprofessional partnerships and alliances among nurses and other health professionals. Evidence-based practice refers to nursing practices that are reliant on scientific evidence to create informed deductive or inductive arguments for decision making and guidance. Quality improvement refers to the systematic and formal applied in analyzing the performance of the practice and efforts to enhance performance. Informatics refers to the technology used in acquiring, storing, retrieving, and using health information to improve the collaboration of patients and healthcare providers ( Sherwood & Zomorodi, 2014) . Therefore, QSEN competencies are incorporated in the ANA standards to ensure that patients receive quality and safe care.

Relating Competency to ANA Standards and Social Policy Statement

Nursing competencies relate to ANA standards and social policy statements. The skills must be depicted in ANA standards. The ANA standards describe the typical practices in each activity undertaken in providing care. During the patient's assessment, nurses are required to collect information pertinent to the patient’s situation. In diagnosis, standard nurses are needed to asses the data collected about the patient to diagnose the patients. In the outcome identification standard, nurses are required to apply the quality improvement competency to identify the expected outcomes to develop an individualized plan to address the patient’s situation. In planning, the nurses are required to use evidence-based practice competency to establish strategies to help attain the expected outcomes. Nurses are expected to implement the development plan through interprofessional collaboration to help the patient get better. The nurses are required to evaluate patient progress towards attaining the necessary outcome of the patient.

The social policy Statement of nursing is about the social contract between the nursing profession and the community at large. Under the Social Policy statement articulates how nurses are valued within society and how they are accountable to society ( Fowler, 2015) . QSEN competencies equip nurses with the right KSAs to help provide quality services to the community. The nurses can achieve their goals through serving the community, thus meeting their accountability needs to the society.

Importance of QSEN Core Competencies in relation to Nursing

QSEN core competencies are essential to the nursing profession because they are designed to prepare future caregivers with the knowledge, skills a and attitudes (KSAs) necessary in continuous improvement of safety and quality of healthcare systems ( Sherwood & Zomorodi, 2014) . The QSEN was developed as a tool to promote better education for nurse students and practitioners. The principal competencies focus is to help nurses to improve their services to provide improved care to patients. The approach has helped nursing educators to develop a comprehensive curriculum. QSEN competencies help nurses acquire vital and comprehensive knowledge that is vital in nursing.

Main Goal of The Key Competencies

Patient-centered care's primary goal is to encourage patients to become active participants in their care. It is a goal that is achieved through active communication between the caregivers and the patient and is to address patients’ needs effectively. The primary purpose of teamwork and collaboration is to increase interprofessional alliances to build on effective communication, mutual respect, and shared decisions to achieve quality patient care. Evidence-based practice's primary goal is to provide patients with information based on expertise, clinician's experience, and evidence to help the patient in making a choice based on personal values and preferences. Quality improvement's primary goal is to improve the ways in which care is delivered to patients to enhance patients’ outcomes. The primary purpose of informatics is to efficiently manage technical systems and data to provide quality care to patients ( Sherwood & Zomorodi, 2014) .

Practices Reflect the Competencies

Nursing competencies can be reflected in the daily practices of the nursing student's clinical environment. Practices such as the ability to understand situations and people, including the patients, show that the student depicts patient-centered care. Students with the ability to build on interpersonal relationships within the clinical environment depict collaboration and teamwork. When nurses assess, diagnose, and recommend treatment plans, they apply the evidence-based KSAs. When the students record patient’s information and use technology to store data through Electronic Health Records, use informatics competence.

Recommendations, Insights, and Feedback

ANA should develop an incorporated document that creates a relationship in policy and standards relating to the nursing profession. It can provide nurses with a broader perspective about the various standards, competencies, and policies to increase the scope of their understanding of their role as care providers to the patients and the community. Nursing students have a responsibility to synthesize the different policies and standards developed by the American Nurses' Association. Nursing students must understand and follow all the established standards. QSEN provides nursing educators and students with a framework to teach on the best nursing practices. Through the QSEN website offers nursing learners with a national education resource.
