Today, the use of supply chain systems in business has become the modern trend in business. Most of the companies, especially those operating on a global scale, have put their attention in establishing and maintaining a number of supply chains. However, the supply chain is considered to be a perilous undertaking for any business (Li, 2014). Some of the members could be faulty and not deliver as expected of them. It is as a result of this that the need for quality management in a supply chain cannot be overlooked. In the quest to ensuring that quality management of the supply chain is realized, a number of tools are put in place (Murray, 2016). Some of these are external whereas others are internal as discussed in this paper.

Internal tools majorly help in doing away with factors that may affect the supply chain internally such as the late delivery of products to the end user out of delays from a particular quarter (Gilaninia, Ganjinia, & Mahdikhanmahaleh, 2013). Some of the tools that can be used are: measuring the result of strategies used, coming to terms with each of the powers involved in the supply chain, studying the new business trends and applying the most viable ones, and outlining the risks involved in the business relationship.

Externally, the supply chain encounters problems such as climate, political influence or disruption, and failure of the seller to deliver on time (Gilaninia, Ganjinia, & Mahdikhanmahaleh, 2013). As a result tools such as inventory tracking, vendor risk tools, and development frame work can be put in place. This help in minimizing if not doing away with most of the external forces that might affect the business at a given time.
