Quantitative Research Method Exploration

The article by The Economist (2013) dissects how bad researchers are at examining themselves. The article has several profound points. For example, based on the article scientists admit that they do wrong things regularly even though they also argue that the errors they make are corrected over time by other scientists who expand the work. The meaning of this is that scientists do not consider verification as their priority. These practices can have negative outcomes, particularly because the results of scientific studies influence larger aspects, such as public policy and profit.

There is also a serious issue with data reporting because modern researchers perform substandard experiments, engage in poor data analysis by excluding inconvenient data from results, and offer false correlations. The outcome of this is that the results of most studies cannot be replicated. Data in quantitative research is very powerful because of the descriptive nature of the research. Description of the data helps researchers see the big picture.

Conflict Theory and Critical Theory in Boys N The Hood

Class struggle is a topic covered by Marx’s Conflict theory. Class struggle is clear in the Boyz N the Hood film. In the film, teenage black men struggle as they live in a working/lower class community. The film relates the class idea to the race idea and demonstrates the two sides of African Americans. For example, when the house of Trey is robbed, his father calls the police in which one black police officer and one white police officer visit the house. The black police officer insults Trey’s father by stating that all African American men are the same (Singleton, 1991). The scene demonstrates that race does not define class because the black police officer considers himself to be greater than other black men even though he thinks that all black men are similar. In a later scene, the same officer pulls over Rickey and Trey without any reason (Singleton, 1991). The scene, again, demonstrates that the upper class is not just associated with the wealthy whites. Based on Marx’s conflict theory, class struggle involves the oppression of the classes, not the oppression of the races (IntroBooks, 2018).

The critical theory emphasizes the normalized nature of racism (Ladson-Billings, 2004). The unfavorable outcomes of Doughboy and Ricky are attributed to the underlying racist factors in their society. Their upbringing of in the community and by their parents affects their life experiences and outcomes. Doughboy and Ricky are raised in a decaying society with many street crimes. Furious exposes these conditions when he tells Trey “If you want to talk about guns…there’s a gun shop on every corner here…there’s a liquor store on every corner in the black community.” Why? “They want us to kill ourselves. You go to Beverly Hills, you don’t see that shit” (Singleton, 1991). The society in which these two characters are raised lacks the physical and social infrastructure required for their personal development and growth.
