A Framework for Reaching Health People 2020 Goals

One of the patient experiences where I encountered a health disparity that was a determinant to the patient's health involved a patient who seemed to be disadvantaged owing to his socio-economic status in the sense that he could not afford quality healthcare services. I believe that the disparity between people in society based on the socio-economic statuses is among the major determinant of their health and wellbeing (Worcester, 2011). In hindsight, I believe that there was an opportunity where I should have acted to help in eliminating this health disparity but did not. In this particular patient experience, I should have helped the patient to secure a more affordable yet high-quality healthcare service (Stock, 2015). If I encountered a similar situation next time, I would act differently in the sense that I would direct the patients to appropriate channels where he or she has to receive effective but affordable healthcare.

Nursing Theories

The nursing theorist whom I closely identify with is Dorothea Orem, who was responsible for the introduction of the Self-Care Deficit Theory. I closely identify with is particular nursing theorist because his principles and values are some of my greatest sources of motivation and inspiration. Besides, this theorist has impacted my nursing philosophy in the sense that I have learned to appreciate the ability of individuals when it comes to performing self-care, which is defined and described as the practice of activities initiated by individuals (Tietze, 2013). In that respect, such activities are usually performed by these individuals on their behalf to achieve more appropriate maintenance of their health, life, and wellbeing. The values and principles espoused by this particular nursing theorist have also enhanced my understanding concerning the need to place more emphasis on preventive care rather than just focusing on the preventive form of care in the course of my nursing profession (Yasemin, 2016).

Ethics and Legal Issues in Nursing

In the course of my nursing experience, I encountered several ethical dilemmas, as well as certain legal issues from which I have learned several things. One of such experiences that have affected me most is the one that involved an elderly patient who wanted to be left to move around without much supervision while I was charged with the responsibility of monitoring his movement within the healthcare facility (Holloway & Wheeler, 2015). In this regard, I was faced with the dilemma of observing my responsibility without failing while at the same time granting the patient his wishes. This particular nursing experience ended up affecting me the most in the sense that I felt guilty since the patient caused additional injuries to himself by walking around. One of the things that I have learned from that particular situation is that I should always be polite but firm while monitoring my patients (Stock, 2015).

Dynamics of working in Inter-professional Teams

Reflecting on my experiences in working with inter-professional teams and the associated dynamics, I think it was characterized by both challenges and opportunities to learn several things. I learned several things about patient care under working closely with various teams of professionals in the healthcare sector, such as ways of effectively communicating with patients and encouraging them (Jarrett, 2017). It is noteworthy that in the course of discharging my roles and responsibilities while working closely with various professional teams in the health sector, I experienced a situation where I should have spoken up for my patient, but did not. During this time, several things kept me from speaking, such as lack of adequate information about the condition of the patient. I felt that I was not sure of what I was expected to speak about regarding the patient and whether I had mastered the appropriate way of speaking for that particular patient (Tietze, 2013).
