The youth in Canada are experiencing a challenging in trying to secure jobs of their career paths within the Canadian employment market. The unfortunate part is that it is not getting any easier for the job hunting youth to secure a job of their wishing. Therefore, I strongly agree with the perspective presented by Kolm in his CBC article that, questionable value of education, stalled careers, and a sense of entitlement are the main reasons as to the high rates of unemployment within the Canadian youth.
I agree with Kolm, that the compromised value of education, which has led to sheer competition for skilled jobs, has rendered most youths jobless. Tertiary institutions are currently more inclined to on the education itself rather than ensuring that the students will have career opportunities as it was before. Kolm asserts that the career opportunities from the basis of apprenticeship and trade programs and therefore should be availed to the youth in order to be more applicable. Institutions within the land of Canada have fostered a common notion that the only way to better someone's career and lead a happy life is through higher education. Although there is nothing wrong with institutions of higher education not to be career-focused, career expectations must be set properly. . According to a survey by Career Builder North America, an emerging trend by employers of hiring graduates from colleges and universities for jobs that formerly required a high school diploma is now common with the job market. For this reason, several graduates are settling jobs that, in the past, have never demanded the training level they possess which justifies the questioning on the education value.

Secondly, Kolm discusses the large number of Canadian youth are struggling to find jobs because of the issue of stalled careers which I support. It is even alarming with the crisis in the struggle of securing a job and building on their career paths. Kolm discusses a recent cover by Time magazine, which some people interpreted as entitlement and laziness on the millennials part who feel they should be compensated more than they have worked for. Similarly, the same story had some requests for personal anecdotes, which had comments claiming that majority of millennials always have their faces buried within their phones and kept whining of their poor state instead of engaging actively in building on their careers. The increase in the number of stalled careers within the Canadian youth is attributed to a lack of hands-on experience in the workforce of the career paths of the youth. Youths with practical goals of developing their careers and becoming professionals and have dedicated themselves to work hard to achieve their dreams through extensive training and education are being forced to settle for low skilled jobs, not within their scope of specialization (Kolm, 2013). Consequently, the youth career paths are left stalled as they try to make ends meet through the low-skilled jobs.
Finally, Kolm highlights the sense of entitlement impacted on the youth by the society and its influence on the youth employability. . The society has taught the youth to follow their passion and that they are a product of what they are taught (Kolm, 2013). The youth has been taught to find their passion and to pursue what they love most. . For this reason, several graduate youths are employed in casual jobs, but they still hope for a better, rewarding career. On the other hand, some youths believe that working as a casual employee translates to not following their passion and choose to stay at home with their parents. Consequently, increasing the unemployment rate in Canada.
In conclusion, the Canadian youth continues to face employment challenges due to the high rates of unemployment in the country. Majority of the youth, either degree or diploma holders are staying at home or not employed within their field of specialization. The root causes of the increasing unemployment rates have been summarized as the questionable value of education, stalled careers and the society impacted sense of entitlement on the youth.
