The late 1970s and early 1980s saw a series of assaults and harassments of outdoor prostitutes in Vancouver by police, journalists, politicians, and residents. The campaign for sexual liberation was supported by a few activists and small groups of gay men and second wave feminists. The fight for sexual liberation by these sex workers did not seem to bear any fruit as the Chief Justice legal injunction in 1984 saw the on-street prostitutes being forcefully relocated even further east. Lack of laws that support sexual liberation has seen murders of numerous women and Trans people since the early 1980s. Streets prostitutes were pushed into total exclusion placing them in extreme danger.

Most of the sex workers included low-income women and male-to-female transsexuals of color who made up the more vulnerable and minority sector of the society. It was, therefore, the responsibility of the government to support or aid protect this group of minority. However what happened saw the on-street prostitutes been pushed further East to the Isolated, bleak and industrial spaces that saw the majority of them meeting their deaths. The provincial government, police, city hall and activities made these sex workers easy prey for many killers. Justice and protection for individuals in a country should be accorded to every individual regardless of their position in society. Every individual has rights and deserves protection by the government, placing these minorities in dangerous situations was a fail from the government.

Most of the moral campaigners aiming at the destruction of the “social evil” only viewed on-street prostitutes as harmful to society. This was unfair considering that the gay society received social, moral and legal; approval. The article raises some questions including: ‘Was the government responsible for the 65 deaths women and Trans people? Moreover, ‘Would the availability of sexual rights help protect the lives of the on-street sexual workers?’
