The film "Guns, Germs, and Steel" attempts to trace the journey of humanity over the last 13,000 years or so. It is also an attempt to explore the origins of inequality in the society. It is an expository film that answers some of the most demanding questions including why the Europeans conquered much of the planet rather than the Inca or the Chinese. It also seeks to address important questions regarding why many cities had to evolve in the Middle East. In the film, it remains apparent that geographic location played a significant role in enabling societies develops agriculturally and socially.

From the movie, it would be vital to assert that the domination of one society over the other is not based on intelligence or race as other historians might have wanted people to believe. Communities will only thrive when they have certain favorable conditions that enable them to engage in resourceful activities such as agriculture and trade. Such societies, in asserting their advantage, create rules that further benefit their existence and designate specific roles to members thereby forming a complex society. Therefore, the success or failure of a society is attributable to the preexisting geographical conditions rather than the personalities of the inhabitants.

From the film, it is evident that the societies can be doomed to permanent failure if certain environmental aspects are not met. The unfavorable climate and a lack of raw materials, for instance, can have immense implications on a society. Therefore, this affects every other aspect of the society including their ability to defend themselves from external attack. The film significantly relates to the situation in the word right now. The civilizations that have experienced the most success had a certain inherent advantage brought about by factors that were not within their control.
