According to the article by Alexander Alonso titles “Rise of the Machines”, it aims at focusing on how technology has influenced the human resource functions of all organizations that embrace technology. The article is based on the movie “Rise of The machines” which focused on how artificial intelligence took over the world and the healthy fear it instilled in the people. Nonetheless, despite the movie highlighting the negative impacts of artificial intelligence, modern-day human resource personnel can harness the benefits of using artificial intelligence if they choose to use it correctly. The author of the article has focused on various means through which artificial intelligence can help in improving human resource such as allowing the professionals in gathering crowdsourcing and performance data, improving employee satisfaction rates and allowing for improved learning and development of the employees. The author believes that it is high time human resource professionals begin embracing new technologies such as artificial intelligence as it will allow an organization in increasing its revenues due to improved employee work productivity and employee engagement.

Importance of Artificial Intelligence to HRM

Crowdsourcing and Performance Data

Within any corporate setting, dreaded performance reviews are always some of the experiences that maker employees to loose morale with their current jobs. A considerable number of employees feel that the current systems used in gathering performance data that is later used in appraisals are infective. A large number of employees believe that the information provided by the systems is incorrect and inaccurate. This has made the performance reviews to lack impactful outcomes to organizations. During the initial “Industrial age”, employees were regarded as being replaceable just like machines. The processes at the time were focused on improving production alone and not an employee’s personal growth. However, modern-day employees want to feel empowered at their workplace, and they have now focused on coaching and development. This is what has seen modern-day organizations implementing various performance management systems to help them in gauging the employee performances with actual baselines. This data is then used in highlighting key areas that require improvement.

However, the systems used in gathering the data on employee performance have proven to be ineffective. The software has continued to provide inaccurate data (Alonso, 2018). In modern-day, business environments, data volumes are expanding, and it is expected they will continue growing steadily soon. The management of such voluminous data is what affects mots organizations as they lack decent data management practices. According to Alonso (2018), new technology will improve the crowdsourcing and gathering of performance data by human resource professionals. The new technology, artificial intelligence, will allow organizations to have better appraisals systems and gathering timely data.

According to Global Force, an employee software provider, traditional appraisal methods do not allow organizations in having information that gives them a wider picture on performance (Alonso, 2018). However, artificial intelligence will provide employers with performance data within regular intervals, thus improving appraisal systems. Despite a substantial number of human resource practitioners citing their reluctance on the technology’s ability to provide accurate data due to voluminous nature of information, more than 100 Fortune 10000 companies are piloting the technology (Alonso, 2018). This is an indication that crowdsourced performance systems offered by artificial intelligence have begun to display their presence within the business environment. Artificial intelligence will enable the professionals in having effective data management, accountability and analytical abilities.

Boosting of Human Resource Information System (HRIS)

The human resource department is an essential component of the company. The main duty of the human resource department is to ensure that a company has the right labor force who will enable it to attain its goals and objectives. Modern-day human resource departments’ have turned to technology to improve their operations and functions. One of the most widely used tools is the human resource information system (HRIS). HRIS aims at enabling managers and employees to improve overall work productivity. The HRIS systems also assist in the recruitment, selection and hiring of employees.

Increased technological advancement has seen the integration of AI into HRIS. Companies have begun embracing the introduction of AI as core element of their digital transformational strategies to drive increased labor efficiency, deliver higher customer, employee experiences and reduce operational costs. Through AI, it has allowed for the existence of HRIS-based chatbots (Alonso, 2018). This Chabot aims to improve the overall employee experience. Employees are an organization’s greatest assets. Highly satisfied employees will have higher work productivity and improved job performance and engagement. However, employees who feel their needs are not fully met by a company they will leave for better places, and this brings about an increased turnover rate.

HRIS-based Chabot enabled by AI allow for automatic chatting with employees. Employees can outline any issues they are facing at work such as those related to their benefits and the HRIS-AI bots will reply to their queries (Alonso, 2018). This allows for less time spent on solving employee queries. Through AI, information is made readily available to employees.

Employee Learning and Development

The continued efforts by a company to boost its employee performances what form the learning and development. Organizations have continued to use a variety of programs and educational methods in training and developing their employees. In the modern-day business environment, training and development are now being used as a competitive advantage. The organizations have realized that by investing in their employees, it does not just act as a motivational process but also enables the firm in creating a highly talented and skilled labor force.

One of the greatest challenge affecting many companies is coming up with an effective training and development program. Before creating the program, an organization must have an awareness of the challenges facing its employees that require improvement. Alonso (2018) cites that over the years, countless technologies aimed at supporting learning and development have emerged. However, the most recent technology is AI. Applications developed using AI have been developed, and this allows them to create interactive assessments and tests that match the learning and development needs of an employee (Alonso, 2018). The artificial intelligence supported applications can pinpoint an employee’s weakness and set up strategies at improving the weaknesses. Alonso (2018) notes that the learning and development applications sue similar operating principles to those of the Lumosity’s interactive brain games. Through such application, the human resource departments will have an ability to create learning and development programs that are fully suited to improve employee overall job productivity.

The article by Alonso, “Rise of the Machines” is based on the movie “Rise of the Machines” focusing on the role of artificial intelligence and its impacts. However, Alonso’s article has focused on the impact of artificial intelligence on human resource functions. Artificial intelligence will help organizations in improving their appraisal systems. The crowdsourcing software applications enabled by artificial intelligence shall enable human resource managers gathering accurate and timely data used for performance appraisals. AI shall also enable for an improved employee experience through using the HRIS-chat-based bot systems. Employee feedback will be made much quicker. Lastly, the AI shall improve the learning and development programs formulated by the human resource management department. Artificial intelligence allows the human resource managers to ensure that tailor made assessment and tests are offered depending on each employee weaknesses.
