Most employees are informed about the essence of separating their cultural and religious beliefs from their practices at work in how they interact with clients, fellow employees and their bosses. It becomes unethical when individuals apply the same set of morals and practices at the workplace as they do at home and church. The mixture of cultural traditions at the workplace and home can make an employee interfere with their duties at the workplace as they would get forced to make decisions at the workplace based on their personal beliefs. An instance where an employee practices their family and church morals at the workplace restricts them to specific values and practices that could not go against their cultural beliefs. This situation leads to unfair judgment and a compromised decision-making process as they make decisions that do not adhere to the work ethics but their personal opinions. There are situations at the workplace that call for the application of work ethics when it comes to the judgment of issues. Individual religious and family beliefs could hinder one from making a fair judgment or from following the orders that are put in place at the workplace to avoid contradicting with their personal beliefs.
I have witnessed someone act unethically, and they claimed that that is how they did their job. A fellow employee who is a social worker used to treat a middle-aged man of depression, and one day the patient revealed to the social worker that he was gay. My fellow employee was from a family that adhered to Christian values and did not advocate for same-sex relationships. The social worker requested to get allocated to another patient as she could no longer offer the required services due to her religious background. In response to this, I advised my fellow employee to separate her personal religious beliefs from workplace requirements. If I were in her situation, I would have continued providing the psychological help to the help because we cannot mix cultural beliefs with the duties required at work as this compromises ethical practices at the workplace.
