York Art gallery and Yarvara Shavrova organized an exhibition dubbed “The Sea is The Limit”. York Art Gallery is located at York, in England. In this years’ edition, the exhibition brought about 11 international artists from 11 different countries to showcase the main topic that is related to Migration. This exhibition was full of thought-provoking artistic works that explore the current migration issues in the world. The main idea behind most arts was to draw an image on the main meaning of nationalism, free movement, and inclusion in relation to the contemporary world or the historical narratives. Featuring arts such as audio-visual objects drawings, paintings and interactive installations, York Art Gallery expresses the desire for a better life and freedom by the immigrants.

This image below, by Shavrova is one of the best arts in the gallery. The image is a drawing she makes based on the pictures once taken by the Irish media on the immigration crisis. This image presents the attributes of a good art as it directly connects the audience’s thoughts with the theme of the exhibition. The wire mesh expresses a deep rejection of this population in space (York Art Gallery, 2018) . Additionally, she makes work black and white suggesting that these people live in a dark world without love and full of loneliness.

Consequently, Taus Makhacheva his showcase in the exhibition above brings out video piece of fishermen sailing in the sea in hope of good catch and disappearing into the horizon (York Art Gallery, 2018) . The art in his performance does not really come out clearly because fishermen sailing most properly leads to catching fish at the end of the day, even if not a lot of fish.

Throughout this paper project and the visit to the gallery, I realize that art goes beyond normal thinking. An artistic work should be well and deeply examined to dig its hidden meanings beyond just the image. Art plays an important role in the society and my life because it speaks out contemporary issues that people may not be able to speak out in people, such as issues involving politics, peace or even love. It also creates and motivates a sense of beauty and acceptance of talents within the society.
