Summary of the article 

The article titled “Dietary fibre and the prevention of chronic disease – should health professionals be doing more to raise awareness? “indicates that an increase in dietary fibres reduced the risk of the development of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer. The research revealed that the intake of fibres is below the target in both adults and the young population. The lack of understanding of the benefits of dietary fibres from fruits, vegetables, high‐fibre/wholegrain starchy foods and nuts and seeds (Lockyer, Spiro, & Stanner, 2016) . The professionals stated that there is limited time to discussion of the nutrition during an appointment as well as lack of interest to the dietary fibres as compared to other nutritive components. In a survey of nurses, it was indicated that one out of five in a sample of fifty did not have adequate knowledge of the benefits of dietary fibres in the prevention of chronic diseases. 

Description of the Diseases 

The diseases discussed in the article are cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer. Cardiovascular disease is a health condition that is characterized by the narrowing or blocking of the blood vessels. These vessels are blocked by increased fatty plaques in the blood vessels as well as Atherosclerosis. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the body’s ability to synthesize sugar and glucose due to the dysfunction of the hormone insulin. Colorectal cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in the colon and not necessarily involving the rectum.

Description of the type’s dietary fibres 

The article describes dietary fibres from the nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits as well as whole grains. Wheat fibre, other cereal fibres, and fibre from specific fruit and vegetables to increase fecal mass and decrease intestinal transit times. Vegetable dietary fibre intake has reduced an aspect contributed by the high costs as the diet of individuals is attached to the market. Whole-grain fibre intake has increased thou people still does not meet the minimal recommended 30g/day without basing on grains (Lockyer, Spiro, & Stanner, 2016) . 

Description of the population being studied 

The population being studied in the article is the professional awareness concerning the benefits of dietary factors and the general public intake rates of these nutritive group. The survey done involving children and adults indicated that they both are taking less than the recommended levels of fibres in their daily diet. 

Summary of Evidence in Article 

There is a high connection between the high consumption of fibres and the prevention of chronic diseases. The linkage between the components of gastrointestinal health is adequately demonstrated. High fibres increase the bowel movement and reduce the corrosion of the gastrointestinal tract. The corrosion exposes a person to infections as well as an abnormal growth of the cell. Overweight is a key factor in diabetes and thus consumption of vegetables and fruits can indirectly reduce the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The high intake of vegetables and fruits also increases the risks of prevention of eye diseases as well as dementia and asthma. 

Concerning cardiovascular disease, vegetables and fruits have a low-fat level. An increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables minimizes the deposit of fats in the blood vessels which reduces the development of CVDs in an individual. 

Personal Fibre Intake Discussion 

Based on my dietary intake, it is below the recommended 400g/per day by the world health organization intake of dietary fibres. My food options are more protein as compared to dietary fibres. To be able to meet the minimal requirements, I need to increase my consumption of fruits and vegetables in all meals per day.
