Approximately over 56 million learners attend schools in different parts of the US daily ( Nies & McEwen, 2019) . The school environment provides an opportunity for professional nurses to influence the lives of students positively. School nurses assist in advancing students’ health, academic performance, long-life achievement, and well-being. School nurses promote the positive response of students to regular advancement, improve safety and health, offer effective case management services, promote capacity building for adaptation, promote self-advocacy, and self-management. School nurses help in influencing the youths who are vulnerable to health challenges, which result from the utilization of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. The vulnerability of learners may accrue from poor nutritional behaviors, suicide, violence, and reckless driving. Consequently, the paper intends to analyze the roles of school nurses in providing comprehensive care in a school setting .

Community Setting

The school setting accommodates a large number of students and staff. Schools enable students to change their behaviors through the guidance of teachers and school nurses. Comprehensively, school nurses offer population and individual health care daily to students. School nurses’ access to a large number of people enables specialists to coordinate and address the care needs of adolescents and children ( Nies & McEwen, 2019 ) . Community health nurses provide comprehensive healthcare services to clients with family caregivers and individuals collaboratively. The joint effort enables community health nurses to offer efficient, safe, timely, patient-centered, equitable, and competent care services. The puberty stage exposes adolescents to various behaviors resulting from peer pressure. Therefore, adolescents are vulnerable to substance abuse, violence, and suicide. Community health nurses link families and students to medical homes and coordinate health care services.

Health Promotion Nursing Intervention

Community health and school nurses participate in various interventions, which intend to ensure comprehensive care services to students and families in the community. CHN participate in obesity prevention to reduce adverse effects overweight, immunization to curb communicable illness, substance or drug abuse assessment, asthma education, and tobacco control ( Holmes et al., 2016 ). Engagement in the interventions enables CHN and school nurses to provide comprehensive care services to students and families in the community.

Effective implementation of immunization, substance abuse evaluation, tobacco control, asthma education, and obesity prevention in a community requires sufficient collaboration of pediatricians, family caregivers, and patients. According to Holmes et al. (2016 ), the team-based operation between CHN and patients, and family caregivers depend on common goals, mutual trust, effective communication, vivid roles, and achievable or measurable processes and results.

Professional Nursing Organization

Staffing of community health and school nurses vary globally. However, the Professional Nursing Organization ensures that community health and school nurses operate according to state requirements of national nurse acts and state regulations ( Holmes et al., 2016 ). The organizations inspire effective health care service delivery to students in a school setting.

Lack of a school nurse in a school setting requires the assistance of unlicensed and delegated workers to assume the responsibilities. American Nurse Association (ANA), American Academy of Pediatrics, and National Association of School Nurse ensures training of unlicensed, sensitive, delegated personnel with the supervision of a registered nurse to offer healthcare services to students in the absence of school nurses ( Holmes et al., 2016 ). Subsequently, the organizations promote community health nurses to deliver comprehensive care to the clients.
