Regarding a book known as "Roots of Wisdom," the artichoke is used to illustrate extinction since it does not possess any seed that could help in the replication of other generations. Human beings are led to believe that their existence is just a waste of space (Mitchell, 2015). The artichoke self of a man, describes a man as a being with several layers without an actual core, as opposed to the avocado self, which is explained using the avocado fruit which has a seed acting as its core source of life. This seed can be used in the generation of several other similar generations.

The existential idea of the self is set to express the perceptions and values one attaches to themselves regarding self-worth and esteem. This gives the human beings a sense of being separate and different from other people (Mitchell, 2015). This takes into account the idea of the human free will and a person's nature. According to the feminists, the woman-self has mostly been considered subordinate and sometimes it has been denied. The woman's worth has been diminished over the years as priority is most often given to the masculine gender (Mitchell, 2015). In 2014, Mitchell wrote about the avocado self and how it is related to the human nature. She stated that the inner-core of the avocado represented the inner self that is barely changed by life experiences.

The fundamental rationality of humans has been met with controversies over the years. Several people believe that human beings can be both rational and irrational depending on the circumstances presented to them. People have repeatedly associated the human rationale with emotions. However, studies have shown that there could be a relationship between a person's emotions and the reasoning they apply in specific instances (Mitchell, 2015).
