Ruth and Linda have a number of similarities. They both come out as women of strong character. This can be seen in Ruth’s ability to address situations amicably without raising her voice like Walter often does. She has faith in her failing marriage and is resilient even in the background of so many economic and marital problems (Hansberry, 1959) . Linda’s is determined to protect Willy from Biff, Happy and the rest of the world. she always maintains her calm with him even when he pushes her to the edge. These traits symbolize emotional intelligence and ability to remain calm in times of chaos. They are able to manage their emotions and thus preventing situations from escalating to unrepairable levels.

The main difference between Linda and Ruth is their perception of the American dream. Linda’s belief in the American dream can be viewed as unrealistic. She equates happiness and freedom to material wealth (Miller, 1948) . Ruth’s interpretation of the American dream on the other hand can be viewed as realistic and rational. She only has simple dreams and would be fulfilled having an averagely comfortable life (Hansberry, 1959)

The better leader.

Ruth from a raisin in the sun is the better leader. She never loses hope amidst of all her problems. She has a way of getting what she wants which can be seen when she persuades her mother in law to stop meddling with just one glance of approval. In doing so, she manages to save her marriage. She listens to others and considers their suggestions and advice (Hansberry, 1959) . Linda on the other hand may appear naïve and driven by fear and desperation. Her determination to save Willy blinds her to what is happening and in the end she does not even understand why Willy took his own life (Miller, 1948)
