Averting the possibility of occurrence of devastating accidents is an integral aspect of airport risk assessment and management. Although people often recount what was done incorrectly in the phase of an accident, it would be crucial that the accident is avoided in the first place by observing the set regulations. In this regard, observing all the segments of airport certificate 139 is integral in fostering the safety of the planes while at the airport and en route. Other than the inspection of the runway, I think a night inspection is also an instrumental approach to avoiding the occurrence of accidents.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, night inspection encompasses a plethora of activities which include but not limited to evaluate taxiway, pavement markings, signage, wind cones, lighting, and airport beacons. Night inspection is deemed necessary especially if the airport management expects to receive flights at night. Boldmethod (2019) asserts that night disorientation plays a central role in aviation accidents that occur at night. The propensity of accidents at night is also elevated because of the challenging night conditions. One accident that occurred due to night disorientation is the crash of a Piper PA28 Warrior that occurred in Destin Executive Airport in Florida. According to witness accounts, the accident occurred because the conditions were extremely “bumpy” making it very difficult for the pilot to control the plane. Furthermore, inappropriate signage and lighting may give a pilot the impression that he or she should land the plane on a runway that is under use, leading to an accident.

In conclusion, aviation accidents that occur at night can be avoided by conducting thorough night inspections that are tailored to ensure the signage, lighting, and beacon, and wind cones are up-to-standard. The bottom line is that such approaches would reduce instances of disorientation that may lead to the occurrence of aviation accidents.
