The selected school district from my area for discussion is the Newark School District. Indeed, controlling several public schools, the school district has a healthcare delivery program. Part of this program is the mandatory annual immunization requirement for daycare and pre-school children. The required immunization for the above groups includes influenza vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine. Nonetheless, these immunization programs liaise with the children’s primary care providers to avoid contradiction in medication.

On the other hand, sixth graders are required to undergo a booster dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Acellular Pertussis. This is as well mandatory for all students transferring to New Jersey from a different state into the school district. Also, meningococcal vaccination is required for all sixth graders, (Newark Board of Education, 2019). Furthermore, as part of its healthcare delivery program, the school liaises and partners with the New Jersey Innovation Institute to occasionally set up pop-up clinics in the schools within the district to offer free health screening for all individuals, including staff, parents, and students. The recent such occurrence was at Barringer High School on 8 th April this year.

Certainly, to ensure that its healthcare objectives and students’ health outcomes are assured, the Newark School District has two assigned school nurses alongside nine health aides that provide several services to the schools. These, according to Newark City Schools (2019) include scoliosis screening, vision screening, hearing screening, first-aid and illness management, medication management, development and implementation of healthcare plans. In the school districts, some of the students have preexisting health problems such as poor vision, dental issues, and other medical conditions. Therefore, for the promotion of health among such populations in the schools, the district school assigns aides to almost every school and together with the two nurses; they help families whose children require special attention and care. Moreover, for children who are not insured, the district school through the state’s health insurance initiative enrolls the children with the SCHIP through which they can access the Newark Child Partial Hospitalization Program and other health services accordingly.
