In the philosophical pursuit of self understanding, there are various approaches developed to address the issue. Existentialism, also known as the artichoke view of the self, is one of the two theories. It borrows the idea of how the artichoke fruit is stratified as compared to the avocado. The artichoke has nothing left at its core when all the buds have been eaten while the avocado has a seed to signify greater value at the core (Mitchell, 2015). Existentialists, therefore, are not very concerned with morals or regulations that may restrict their adventurous endeavors. They are carefree individuals who live by the day and live life to the fullest. Existentialists are known to lack in piety for they do not believe in later pay for today’s righteousness. To them, delayed gratitude is an unreachable mirage. They are thus guided by slogans such as “You Only Live Once.” Existentialists are also of the view that one is born with ability to develop to suit the environment they live in. it is through the interactions with people of their home community that individuals develop their character.

As an alternative to the essentialist view of the self other philosophical theories such as feminist and existentialism have helped in making the world a better place. Feminism, to begin with, has enhanced the dynamic nature of the woman to make her fit better in the society. The idea of the woman performing better in the endeavors which were predominantly male is a plus that has revolutionized humanity. It is also crucial that this gender has been lifted from the subordinate and helpless position to accept the fact that they are of great help to the society. Existentialism has also redeemed the people from the yoke of religion. By highlighting that living by the day is a probability, those who identify with the existential views are capable of living guilt free and thus live five to the fullest making the best of every single day. Existentialists will not be choosy when it comes to life matters and are the type of people who will put up with diverse cultures. They are very adaptive and thus will easily co exist with others.

The idea that human beings are fundamentally rational creatures is open to debate. To begin with, it is only the human that is able to judge what is rational and also make comparison between rational and irrational. Putting into consideration that it is through action or inaction that an individual is judged rational or otherwise, it is important to note that it is not only the humans that are capable of acting in ways that may influence or have an effect on others. A pet may understand a bored master while animals have been known to save distressed infants. To understand a human cry and rescue a baby is, to say the least, human. That being the case, it is worth noting that being rational is not a fundamental human attribute. Taking into account, for example, that humans have indulged in acts that have been termed as inhuman there is an indicator that rational thinking is fundamental in humans. Uncalled for abuse, murder and mutilations of fellow humans have been referred to as beastly acts sometimes attracting debate whether a beast can do the same to one of its own kind. This is an indicator that when man has the ability to act as a rational thinker, there is also a possibility of being irrational. The flipside brings him to a status lower than an animal considering that as humans we are faced with a choice to be rational.
