K.P. begins by pointing out that Sepsis is a national problem that has affected over a million people every year according to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Close to half a million are estimated to succumb to the condition every year. K.P. goes on to clarify what Sepsis is. She states that it is a condition that attacks the immune system (Angus & Van der Poll, 2013) . Anyone is susceptible to Sepsis. However, those with conditions such as cancer, organ transplant patients, and HIV are at a higher risk of getting affected by the condition. Fungi, bacteria, and viruses are the main causative agents. Examples given by K.P. include UTIs, abdominal infections, Pneumonia, kidney infections, and wounds. The hospital in which K.P works has understaffing issues, limited resources, and lack the proper training to treat sepsis. This project seeks to apply transformational leadership to enhance teamwork and catapult the growth of the nurses working in the hospital. The objective is to increase the nurses’ compliance as they work through the various sepsis protocol when screening patients.
Proposed Project
As I am currently working in a mental health hospital, I agree with K.P. that understaffing is a really bugging issue that most people tend to overlook. Many like to think that mental health nurses have no workload and that their work involves giving scheduled medicine doses and injection shots and that it only requires a few nurses to cover several patients (Murdaugh, Parsons, & Pender, 2018) . However, having experienced the duties of a nurse working in an understaffed hospital setting, I can confirm that nurses tend to be overworked and are given too many responsibilities that they seemingly cannot handle (Twigg, Gelder, & Myers, 2015) .
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
The first step to solving these issues will be to get ways to improve how effective nurses are by encouraging them to work as a team. Nurses also need to have their grievances directly addressed by the management of the hospital. To ensure this, the nurses have to be allowed to select a committee that will represent them in top management. Over the years, I noticed that the workload becomes less when the hospital absorbs interns and allows them to handle some of the responsibilities of nurses. However, this has been done inconsistently. The hospital has to put in a framework that allows interns to be present at any particular time. Furthermore, the internship program is beneficial not only to the interns but also to the hospital. As I listened to the presentation by K.P., I noted three things that will help me, as a mental health nurse, formulate my capstone project.
As they are being overworked, nurses tend to tire and find it difficult to give their full attention to patients in such situations. More often than not, the time to do a STAT sepsis code for every patient becomes limited and this may result in inconsistencies. The way forward would be to do all the required tests on time and this would certainly require more nurses. Overall patient’s safety is compromised by these issues.
K.P.’s presentation is well referenced. One can easily tell that she did her research well. I would want my capstone project to paint the same picture. Apart from being a formality, proper literature review and referencing makes information more credible.
The ‘improved idea’ technique will help me lead and sustain the changes that I hope to implement.
