Discovering Yourself

Discovering oneself is one of the most important steps towards becoming a great leader. Shackleton demonstrated he had discovered himself by leading in a way that created value in the lives of his crew members. He realized that leadership is not a position or a title, but it is action and example. Although his crew members called him boss, he ensured that he never received any preferential treatment. He worked with others in the spirit of teamwork. By discovering himself, Shackletone was able to display a strong character, purpose, and authenticity. His self-discovery helped him to continually improve his self-awareness, allowing him to inspire his crew members to success.

Appreciating Constituents and their Diversity

Great leaders understand the importance of appreciating diversity. Appreciating constituents and their diversity encourages teamwork and collaboration. When the team’s efforts to extricate the ship proved futile, Shackleton did not show any signs of disappointment. He knew that each member had done his best. He instead provided guidance about how to survive the elements both physically and emotionally. He also ignored the predominant class system at the time and treated his crew members equally, irrespective of their social status. The selfless gesture inspired teamwork in his crew.

This helped bring the best out of each of his men. Eventually, each crew member was able to contribute to the overall success of the expedition. Led by Shackleton’s example, the ordinary men turned into extraordinary men, surviving nearly two years of unimaginable hardship.

Serve a Purpose
