The Al-Hilal published a number letters that correspond to the question 'Should a woman demand all the rights of a man?' The letters addressed the ‘woman question’ through addressing the place of women in the Middle Eastern society which is slowly being modernized. The debate particularly addresses Egypt as the country experienced an open press that evaded the Ottoman censorship laws which were strict. Furthermore, during that period, Egypt was going through a political and social transformation after the settlement of the British. The press in this country, therefore, became a vital forum for where the ideas about the ‘new woman’ are broadcasted and the claims for modernity are identified.

The author of these letters adds a variety of motifs that are familiar in answering the ‘woman question’. The addition is made as an attempt to defend the rights of women. The author also uses a style that is rhyming and very flowery. The writer argues that the role of women is special in shaping the modern society. Moreover, the women are essential in creating an impact on good upbringing as well as refining the morals of the individuals in the society. Al-Hilal, however, does not identify the roles of women so as to not limit the ideal responsibilities of the women. According to Al-Hilal, the role of the woman is to guard the virtue, to educate, to nurture as well as to be the mistress of the house. Thus, Al-Hilal, in her letters, considers the contributions of the woman to be as important as those of the men. This notion also applies in the context of politics as well as science. An example is identified that girls were likely to become better homemakers if they were given education.

The article implies that the women have an impact on the society since modernization has geared the society from times that were characterized by roughness and physical power. The past times viewed women as those of less impact on the society due to their tender characters, delicateness as well as their gentle faces. In addition, the women did not participate in politics or science as their character was viewed as one that was far from being in a position to advise or perpetrate.

Al-Hilal identifies that the women, though unable to participate in male deliberations such as war, were responsible for bringing up the men. The women were also responsible for instilling a sense of courage and boldness in the men even though no historian mentions the influence of the woman. Moreover, as the world shifts towards modernization, the struggle for peace as well as maintaining the variety of humanity is essential. Attaining these factors can only made possible through creating feelings towards good works, compassion and delicateness. Since the woman is more pure in terms of feelings and emotions, she has a higher influence on the conditions of modernization as compared to a man who is less compassionate.

The author claims that the women do not seek to compete with the men in politics or war as those activities are in the man’s forte and the man is more likely to succeed in these fields. However, the author explains that the woman is the axis of happiness as she carries the burden of life and is responsible for comforting the man when he is sad or in trouble. In addition, the woman is responsible for subduing the man’s anger as well as softening the cruelty of his heart. Therefore, if the man is not happy in his home, he cannot be happy at work and is thus unable to discover or invent. The article concludes by identifying that the woman has a remarkable impact on the modern civilization that is equal if not more than that of the man. Therefore, she has the liberty to request for similar rights as that of the man.
