The drama has three key characteristics that make it a significant part of human culture. The first characteristic is the attention that it draws due to it being interesting. Everybody loves to see stories told and acted and thus, people like Chinua Achebe in Things Fall Apart use storied of people like Obierika since he knows that people love stories and therefore will be an opportunity to deliver a message (Achebe, 2018). Then the ability of drama to pass information is the second characteristic that makes it part of human culture. Through it, lessons are given to children, adults and leaders alike (Read, 2003). Therefore, stories as well as modern day movies are developed for each age group and are used to pass information to the different kinds of audiences. Finally, the drama can make the society see itself. In other words, it is a mirror whereby the information being passed can be crafted in a way that members of the community can see themselves in the different characters hence creating a chance to learn.
In Chinua Achebe’s novel, these elements are evident beginning with the example given above where drama being something that attracts everyone is used as a chance to pass on information to the members of the society. In this case, through Things Fall Apart , Achebe reveals to the community the need for change and how the process of change can be achieved without the perpetrator of change running the risk of being ostracized as seen in Obierika (Achebe, 2018). Additionally, the element of being able to carry a message and deliver it to an audience is also there in this same book (Read, 2003). As seen, the book is not only about change, but it is also about how different personalities can do the same things, and one achieves success while the other fails due to their approach. Thus, Obierinka succeeds to change the cultures of the society while Okonkwo fails (Achebe, 2018). Finally, the fact that people can see themselves in the characters is very pronounced in this novel by Achebe. One individual can read and see that he or she is approaching changes in their lives like Okonkwo while another can see themselves using Obierinka’s approach (Achebe, 2018). This factor thus arouses change in the audiences having different personalities after mirroring themselves.

Having worked with drama this week, I have indeed developed new ideas about drama. One outstanding idea that I have developed is that drama is not just for entertainment. There is more to drama and the authors or directors in of films do not just put in place some things by accident since everything – from the character, props, setting, events plot, and others –has a significant role to play in delivering a message. In the same way, my ideas about the novel have changed. I have realized it is not just a story that happened among the Igbo, but there are other lessons to learn for every person regardless of their background.
