Social imagination, according to Mills, is a process of understanding the relationship of biography to history. The biography takes place at a personal level, whereas events culminating at a structured level are history. Personal troubles can be referred to us problems affecting individuals whereby an individual himself and the other members in the society blame the cause of issues on the individual own moral failures. For example, unemployment is trouble that should not be seen as personal but public. Unemployment is an example of sociological imagination whereby the unemployed person tends to have a negative feeling such as defeat, depletion, and discouragement. In this scenario, an individual most often burdens him or herself instead of the entire system by carrying the whole blame of the misery they are facing. This leads them to isolation, apatheism, and keeping off politics and their processes. Public issues that emanate from the cultural and social structures of an individual are problems that affect several individuals in a society. Mills’ feeling is that most problems that are considered private troubles are best understood as public issues.
According to Habermas, communication is an essential factor among people to enable them to have a meaningful interaction with others in society. There is an existence of undistorted and distorted communication. Distorted communication occurs when members participating in a conversation do not have a common understanding, also when a participant is not willing to listen to the arguments and ideas presented by the other party, and the contrary is undistorted communication. An example of distorted communication is when there is a discussion among individuals of unequal status in society, also when employers are not willing to table arguments in negotiation between them and a union. Also, it is significant to ensure that undistorted communication prevails for a harmonious society to exist.
