Social movement refers to a kind of group action. A social movement is a big, informal group of people or organizations that focus on social issues. An essential part of the successful activist movement is to participate in an event ( Findji, 2018 ). The event is build up and sustained by the activism and later thrown to the public like a volcano and finally erupt after years of fighting for the cause. The most recent social movement is the Black Lives Matter. Jackson was an influential activist in the social movement, Black Lives Matter. He stated that the movement would be necessary for the organization of racial justice as well, not just the movement alone. But, he further explained that it would not be an easy task to predict how the public might articulate the matter. The Black Lives Matter movement is an international movement that originated from the African-American community. The movement campaigned against racism and violence towards black people.
Social Media is an important platform where masses can be influenced making it a reliable and fast means of influence. In the year 2013, the Black Lives Matter Movement went to the social media with the hashtag, #BLACKLIVESMATTER after an African American teenager by the name Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in February 2012 (Callahan, 2018). The matter became nationally recognized in America because of the street protests following the death of two African Americans by the name Michael Brown as a result of the demonstrations and Eric Garner in Ferguson and New York City respectively. The use of the hashtag originated and developed by Opal Tometi, Patrisse Cullors and Alicia Garza, was expanded to a national network of more than thirty native chapters between the year 2014 and 2016.
