Social Problems in contemporary Society involve challenges that people encounter in their day to day life as they struggle to survive in the dynamic and modern. In the book Understanding Social Problems , 10 th edition social problems are analyzed from a broader perspective ranging between micro to macro levels by focusing on problems that lead to inequality, poverty, and conflict in the United States of America and internationally. These problems include illness and healthcare in general, drugs and alcoholism, as well as family problems. The alternatives solution to handle these social problems is “The Human Side" and "Self and Society.” This initiative involve individuals ensuring they understand how to handle the social problems when they arise as their main concern is building personal capacity while the society creates an enabling environment that allows the inclusion of the less fortunate people such as the homeless and depressed..

Homelessness is a situation that arises when one lives in a house that is below the minimum standards or inability of one to secure tenure. Housing for the homeless is a sustainable and affordable solution to the homeless more so for sustaining life in Los Angeles and California. However, the housing facilities provided should meet the hygienic required standards and provide safety for the people. The alleys of the streets contain a significant number of homeless people who lack necessities of life such as clean water and food. Insecurity is also a significant concern as people are struggling to survive in this hostile environment where there is no employment opportunities or instead economic activities where people will earn their livelihood. Drug abuse, among the homeless, on the other hand, continues to be a way of life.

SkidRow Housing Trust, an agency that has been operating for thirty years as a non-profit developer is playing a very crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of the homeless and low-income individuals by providing permanent housing facilities for people who are existing as homeless, case management, life skills training, counseling, health clinic, and mental health help. The primary goal of the agency is to get people to a more sustainable and more reliable mode, as of now the agency has 26 buildings that are now housing approximately 2000 people who are now becoming more self-reliant and self-sustaining thus offering a permanent solution.

A sustainability scientist such as Stephanie Pincetl points out that homelessness is brought about by the high price of real estate that the majority of the low-income population cannot afford. She further points out that we are all responsible for this situation as we are should be concerned with how we live with our neighbors. Economic inequality and depression is a significant problem facing the majority of low-class households and the homeless. Unequal distribution of resources, income, and opportunities among the different groups in society remain the primary source of social problems. More so in developed countries where the government system is large and diversified.

Poverty as a source of social problems mainly focuses on lack or inadequate of productive resources that a household can use to generate income to sustain their livelihood. Poverty is manifested in two major ways namely; hunger and malnutrition as the household will be unable to access sustainable dietary essentials in all time. However, illiteracy, as well as social discrimination, contribute to social problems that affect some of the US citizens more so in Los Angeles and California as it has more than 60 thousand homeless people who live in poverty. They do not have any economic activity to do to generate income; they live on streets where there are insecurity and high crime rate. To remedy this problem, the government should create equal employment opportunities for people in California and Los Angeles. Equal education funding controlled by the state government should allocate enough portion to the local government of the affected areas so as the fund school system of each municipal to reduce the number of school dropouts.

Social inequality such as unequal distribution of resources has increased the rates of social injustice as it increases the income gap between different social classes in the society. Disparities in the way the government distributes economic resources have promoted social inequalities since it leads to the unequal accumulation of wealth. The states that face social and economic inequality should be allocated more funds from the national government budget. This will ensure stress, depression and status anxiety that face the majority of people who are facing social problems is improved since they will have the capital to venture into economic activates. Inequality in terms of health services provision is also a matter of grave importance in states that face social problems.

The government should invest medical facilities in all states and more on the states that face social problems since in these areas cases of mental illness, stress, anxiety, and depression is high. Government programs aimed at solving the social problems eventually benefit the government workers and only a few who are lucky. The government should start investing in numerous ways of dealing with homelessness, and different political parties can start a program of feeding and providing housing facilities for the homeless. Additionally, a lack of education, gender discrimination, and rapid population growth among others also contribute to social problems.
