The selected article by Fitzgerald et al., (2011) focuses on practice nursing at an advanced level and is published in a reputable journal with three distinct writers from different Universities in the United States. These scholars write about the advanced practice in nursing education in preparation for an improved U.S. healthcare system and discuss specific challenges and strategies that can be used to improve advanced practice nursing clinical education to ensure enough high end trained nurses are available in practice. As the world prepares for the demand for more sophisticated medical services with nursing included, as pointed to by several reports internationally ( Bryant-Lukosius et al., 2017 ), it is imperative to find out factors affecting practice nursing education.
The challenges illustrated in this article include both internal challenges such as high enrolments, incremental demand for nurse educators, non-competitive educational salaries, difficulties emanating from tenure-track research stands, ballooning faculty workloads, reducing graduation from these advanced practice nursing programmes, challenges in accessing these facilities in remote areas and lack of diversity. The external challenges analyzed include the limited number of clinical sites, competition, urban-oriented favor in accessing such facilities, certification and regulatory requirements, funding issues, a mismatch in demographics and politics of gender and power relations. This article offers strategies for reviewing these including interprofessional collaborations and intensive curriculum reviews (Fitzgerald et al., 2011). Other methods include extensive use of simulation and cross-professional education including distance education, partnerships with communities, innovation on patient-oriented programmes and improved funding for advanced practice nurse clinical education to be on par with graduate education. With this in place, the intention of educating and increasing the skills to the best level possible of nurses will be realized. This will lead to the realization of high-quality healthcare resolving even some of the challenges the writers gave from personal experience.
