In an organization, the span of control is an essential element when implemented well can spur exceptional organizational change and stability. In a medium-sized state correctional system, the span of control would be eight. Such a system would have several correctional facilities, each with a warden heading the institution. The director is tasked with the overall supervision and strategic planning for the system of correction facilities. There will be seven subordinates who will answer directly to the director. Three of the assistant will serve in the capacity of the assistant director while the other five will be administrators.

The correctional system will have three critical dockets. The Field Operations Administration (FOA) department will be headed by a deputy director (Deputy Director Field Operations Administration-DDFOA). The DDFOA will be responsible for state parole and probation supervision, including all strategies of specialized monitoring. Second, the Correctional Facilities Administration (CFA) will also be led by a deputy director (Deputy Director Correctional Facilities Administration-DDCFA) (“ Michigan Department of Corrections," 2019 ). DDCFA will be mandated with ensuring that all facilities are secure and that the wardens discharge their responsibilities as required. Also, the DDCFA will manage aspects as prisoner transportation and classification (“ Michigan Department of Corrections," 2019 ). Last, Budget and Operations Administration (BOA) will be under Deputy Director BOA (DDBOA), whose mandates overseeing budgetary responsibilities and their implementation across the entire correctional system.

The above deputy directors’ work will be supported by four administrators who will also report to the director. General Counsel (GS) is mandated with providing the correctional department with legal directions on issues that face all dockets, including crisis management, compliance, and public policy advocacy. The administrator of Health Services (AHS) will be in charge of health matters of the entire correctional system such as dental programs, psychiatric, nursing, dietary, and medical records, among others (“ Graphic Organization Chart -- Florida Department of Corrections," 2019 ). Public Relations Officer (PRO) will be responsible for both internal and external communication for the entire correctional system. In this role, the PRO will publish weekly or monthly correspondences, oversee the use of social media and provide the media and general public with the required information (“ Graphic Organization Chart -- Florida Department of Corrections," 2019 ). Last, the Inspector General (IG) of the correctional facility will oversee a wide array of duties, including detection and deterrence of resources wastage, fraud and abuse, and misconduct among the staff. The IG will be mandated with ensuring that the facilities operate within the set guidelines and that efficiency is ensured (“ Graphic Organization Chart -- Florida Department of Corrections," 2019 ). The IG will also be responsible for overseeing the development and improvement programs of inmates.

With the above span of control, the director of the correctional system will be able to run its activities smoothly. Under each officer, there will be other more detailed categorizations of employees who will report to them.
