Sports for development and Peace (SFD) is a social movement which involves the use of physical activity and sports aimed at promoting peace and development. There are programs conducted in the society to ensure sports development by governmental, national, international and Non-Governmental sports institutions. These programs include sporting for peace, humanitarian relief, and social movements like Kicking Aids Out. These programs are under "Sport for Development and Peace" (SDP) umbrella. SFD programs ensure everyone in the society has the right to take part in the sports activities. They work towards achieving development goals while promoting peace. According to Reid (2006), the Olympic sport is one of the sports activities that has promoted peace nationally and internationally. Sports programs also incorporate sport's best values and promote the integrity of sporting adventure.

Studies by Kidd (2008) show that there are international initiatives incorporating sports to help in the social development. Universities, governments, and organizations have established various programs dealing with different social issues under the Sport for Development and Peace umbrella. SFD programs integrate play, sport and other non-sport activities to augment their efficiency. They are conveyed in a unified way with other initiatives to strengthen them. Communities are empowered through engaging in sports activities and sports initiatives. Sport for Development and Peace contribute to millennium development goals.

The sports programs have transformed lives today through promoting social developments and peace. The role of SFD programs has grown over years and taken part in the development of millennium goals. Sports critiques associate the development in the society with education rather than sports initiatives. Freirean pedagogy study on how important dialogical education is, how transformative education is, and education politics shows criticism of sports development programs ( Grace & Wells, 2007). However, education programs can be incorporated into sports to make Sports for Development and Peace better.
