Steps to Effective Cross-Cultural Communication

The first step to promoting effective communication amongst the culturally diverse people is to be keen to the way different people receive and understand certain information. This will ensure that the information is delivered in a way that is understood. Creating a harmonious and peaceful environment that promotes acceptance among people of different cultures can help facilitate effective communication. Promoting cultural acceptance can promote cultural exchange and interaction in a way that enhances communication between people from diverse culturalbackgrounds. Encouraging people to practice active listening and watching nonverbal cues when talking with people of different cultural background can also play a key role inpromoting effective communication for the culturally diverse environment. Keeping an open mind and acquiring some knowledge of the culture and language of other people can create a personal touch and enhance effective communication among people from different cultures.

Summary of the Interview

Lack of acceptance of the cultural differences amongst different stakeholders is one of the major diversity issues that affect the institution. Every stakeholder wants to maintain some power culture, and this leads to an inability to accept that cultural differences exist and needs to be tolerated. Lack of acceptance can then create a conflict among the stakeholders as everyone tries to maintain their culture and make it dominate over others. Prejudice and preferential treatment can result from the stakeholders who have different cultural backgrounds. The tendency to provide favorable treatment to a person from the same cultural background is usually high in a culturally diverse environment. This could create an environment where the stakeholders do not have respect for each other and lack of acceptance of the opinions and ideas of others. Everyone will tend to feel that their opinions are right over the opinion of others.

Communication difficulties arise in an environment where there are many people from different cultural backgrounds. The way people receive and understand information varies depending on the cultural backgrounds. There is, therefore, a need for the school administrators to create an environment that promotes effective communication and enhance the acceptance of cultural diversity and differences. This can help eliminate harassment and conflict that arise due to differences in culture among students. The administrator notes that when one culture seems to dominate over the others, then a conflict is created because people compete to have their culture dominate over the others. Gender bias can also emerge when one gender views the other as inferior or unfit to undertake certain tasks. Viewing people based on their gender creates biases amongst students and leads to conflict and lack of respect. It is essential to promote equality between both genders and avoid using gender-sensitive words. The administrator also notes that it is important to promote acceptance of the views of others amongst the students from the different cultural background. People have different views, and the stakeholders need to ensure that there is acceptance of the views of others even when they are contradicting.
