Student affairs professionals can access sensitive and personal information about the students. Students often consult with the affairs professional when faced with several academic issues that interfere with their learning experience. Students often share sensitive personal information with the hopes that the faculty will exercise privacy and confidentiality. According to Burnard and Chapman (2005) informed confidentiality is intricate when as it means that a person voluntarily, knowingly and intelligently gives their consent to access their personal details. In most instances, learning institutions ensure that the student’s affairs professionals uphold the highest level of confidentiality when handling student information. Nonetheless, in some scenarios confidentiality is shared intentionally or unintentionally which may affect the relationship between the student whose privacy was violated and the institution.

Informed consent is essential as it aims at promoting the rights of an individual through self-determination. Student confidentiality is protected by both legal and ethical guidelines that require the student affairs professionals to protect student information. According to Borhani et al. (2013), ethical sensitivity is an important component of professional competency. In an instance where a student’s information is shared, the student affairs violate their ethical obligation since they have broken the student’s trust. There are several instances why a student may seek to consult with the student affairs practitioners when faced with unfair treatment or harassment within the institution. The ethical and legal rights protecting the student require that the school administration should take appropriate measures immediately to address the issues raised.
