Substance abuse is one of the greatest deterrents to the progress of individuals in the contemporary society. This occurs where a mood altering constituent is used inappropriately and consistently for another use other than the one it is intended for. Raising awareness regarding the issue and enhancing education incentives seeking to enlighten individuals has not succeeded in decreasing the rate of mortality resulting from such behavior. Moreover, the dependence on such drugs is not viewed as a crime but rather as a disease that requires to be addressed. In most cases intervention pertaining to substance abuse tends to be postponed and this intensifies the risk of a catastrophic ending. Anesthetists are currently some of the most affected victims of substance abuse.

It is estimated that around to 10-14 % of all physicians are prone to become addicts of substance abuse in the course of their practice. Also, there is a 2.7 times greater chance that anesthetists will turn to substance abuse compared to professionals in other physician groups ( Mayall, 2015 ). Such individuals are unable to abstain and also experience lack of behavioral control. Most of the anesthetists end up being subject to this form of abuse owing to a history of abuse within their families. This is also capable of affecting individuals from dysfunctional families. Besides the severity of the abuse is determined by genetic and environmental factors surrounding the users.

Substance abuse is bound to impair the minds of anesthetists rendering them ineffective at work. These individuals experience daily exposure to drugs such as opiates and sedatives which are highly likely to exacerbate their addiction ( Mayall, 2015 ). When most of these individuals abuse the substances as students, there is a capability that trainees will be eager to be part of the same specialty hoping to get free access to drugs. What is most concerning is the idea that anesthetists under the influence are capable of administering the wrong form of medication to patients further complicating their medical condition or leading to their ultimate death.

To sum it up, it is apparent that Anesthetists are currently some of the most affected victims of substance abuse. Most of these individuals acquire the behavior from people within their families with a history of abuse. Besides, daily exposure to substances is likely to contribute to the same situation further leading to addiction. The greatest effect of such abuse on the user is the possibility that they will administer the wrong medication to their patients. It would, thus, be advisable for proper caution to be taken to minimize such incidences from occurring.
