Decision Making

Decision making is another leadership competence that a nurse leader should possess. Usually, one of the core competence in leadership is the leader's ability to make appropriate decisions or lead a good decision-making process. A good nurse leader should be in a position to know when to make decisions and when to consult peers or subordinates in the process of making decisions.

Courage

Courage is a leadership competence that is also crucial for effective leadership in the healthcare industry. A nurse leader should be in a position to take calculated risks and also have the courage to stand up for what they believe.

Influential

Typically, leadership at its core is about influencing others. A competent nurse should be able to master how to influence other nurses and wield power fairly and effectively socially. For a nurse leader to be influential, he/she must have soft interpersonal skills.

Effective Leadership Theory and Styles

For a nurse leader to achieve competency, there are some leadership theories and styles that need to be employed. Transformational leadership theory is an effective leadership theory that encourages competency in the healthcare setting. This kind of leadership theory is based on encouraging other nurses to give their level best and also motivate them to be positive while performing their daily activities. This leadership theory is normally done through a basis of shared mission and vision of improving the quality of care. Democratic is a leadership style that that is to be used because it builds consensus through engagement and participation of the patients and nurses in a common platform. This leadership style approach will ensure that the leader's behavior is examined in their groups.

Competences to Consider and Included In Candidate Qualification

There are many competencies to consider when determining the appropriate candidate to fit into the role of nurse leadership. The most commonly recognized component is the nurse's capability to provide patient-centered care ( Troth et al., 2017 ). A nurse with this capability will be able to ensure that there are a continuous decision-making process and constant care. Another significant aspect to consider when determining the appropriate candidate is the nurse's ability to incorporate evidence-based practice aimed at optimizing care in the healthcare sector.

Cultural Diversity to Attract and Retain Candidates

Preferably, it is of great importance to encourage and promote cultural diversity in various workplaces because a culturally diverse organization realizes the best operational outcome. Usually, there is no documented way of enhancing cultural diversity in an organization. Thus, the only way of doing so is by asking the employees for referrals for more qualified personnel looking for employment. Encouraging cultural diversity training in an organization ensures that the employees are retained. By practicing so, the employees will comprehend that a suitable candidate is usually hired based on an individual’s qualification (Clark et al., 2016).

Changes That Broaden New Nurses Appeal in Entering the Field

The notable change in the healthcare setting is the incorporation of enhanced technology. The enhanced technology ensures that service provision is optimized and quicker when compared to when technology was unavailable. Also, the physicians' ability to comfortably combine healthcare setting operation and the office practices enable the nurses to engage in different other tasks, thus expanding primary care in the hospital setting (Clark et al., 2016). Generally, when primary care tends to expand, the nurses have to undertake chunk activities aimed at coordinating quality care.

Regulations and Policies in a Nursing Career

While on duty, nurses should hide their tattoos. Hence, the employers adhering to a strict dressing code will be able to discourage the employees with a large number of tattoos on their bodies. It will be challenging to find a nursing job, especially when the tattoos are offensive in the profession. As per the workplace regulations, the employer may be in a position to develop their dressing code provided that the dressing code does not discriminate against other employees ( Troth et al., 2017 ).
