Complex adaptive systems occur in many professional practices, including the nursing practice. As a family nurse practitioner, a situation in which an issue or concern common to this specialty would impact that system is lack of physician supervision. Notably, the level of control by physicians greatly impacts on the capacity of a Family Nurse practitioner to practice the full extent of their training and education (Devi, 2011). Upon employment, nurse practitioners are required to operate in partnership with a physician. However, if the physician’s supervision is eliminated, the entire system will be impacted. From the micro level, the situation will result in inclusion of numerous un- necessitated procedures and tests resulting in longer treatment durations ( Gardner et al., 2013) . At the meso level, the situation will result in excessive referrals and other issues due to the inadequate experience of the nurse practitioner. At the macro level, shifts may be detected regarding the handling of the numerous and complicated medical conditions. Lack of guidance on overcoming hurdles in the profession will result in a decline in the overall level of patient outcomes ( Gardner et al., 2013) .
From the micro level, specialized software can be developed and used to build the patient’s profile and thus avoid the un-necessitated tests which will in turn reduce the waiting time. At the meso level, the software will improve the process for prescribing treatment resulting in lesser referrals. At the macro level, the software will provide a detailed database for the nurse practitioner to have make the right judgments. As a result, patient outcomes will improve significantly for the benefit of the entire healthcare system. Moreover, at each of the levels, working a collaboration between the practice nurses and the physicians will result in enhanced patient outcomes.
