Technology is a critical part in today's world as it has not only helped in making work easier in various spheres but has also improved the living standards different ways, for instance, health, education, security and transport among others. Police departs taken advantage of technology in their daily work and have brought great transformation. When the police use the latest technologies in their work, their safety and that of the public is enhanced. A good example is the use internet to track criminals locating stolen goods, among others. Police have also used technology in activities such as crime mapping and prognostic analytics. The paper will, therefore, explore how technology has helped in the policing through crime mapping and data mining.
One of the ways through which technology has positively impacted policing is through crime mapping through the use of computerized software known as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Through the soft, the police can map or track criminal behaviours and activities. The GIS helps the police to go into details about the crime patterns in diverse locations, space and time. They use it to identify habitats and hotspot areas where criminal activities are carried out. Similarly, local criminal activities can be tracked through the use of technology. The challenge that has, however, been experienced is the lack of installation of some technology devices that can be used for tracking in various areas.

Data mining is also another way through which technology has positively impacted policing. After the 9/11 attack, the police department became more vigilant regarding data being shared by people within and outside America. They obtain data through technology such as social media, mobile phone communications, automated License Plate Recognition (LPR). Additionally, through the Remote Management Stations (RMS), they can also get data through agencies. Data mining has helped the police to handle and sort vast volumes of data from diverse sources. By viewing data, it can identify suspects planning any criminal activities.
