Rosling in this talk highlights how the East and the West have compared over the last centuries in terms of economic growth patterns. At the beginning of the talk, Rosling talks about how his mindset concerning the East was changed while he was undertaking a one-month public health course. Rosling originated from Sweden which he considered more progressive economically than any other country thus he did not have to read so hard to make it in life. However, while he attended the class with Indian students, he realized that Indian students were better than himself. The Indian students, in fact, read a book up to four times while Rosling and other Swedes only read the book once and went partying. In this class, Rosling was surprised to find himself in the lower quarter though he was always in the upper quarter. It is this realization that has formed the basis of this talk.
Rosling realized that the East and the West had a deeper relationship spanning back to several centuries. This link has helped shape countries from both the West and the East either positively or negatively. According to Rosling, the East was at one time richer than the West since they determined the trading terms with the Western countries. For example, in 1858 China won the Opium war, Japan signed the Harris Treaty to create a favourable trading environment with the US. In this case, the West depended on then Asian countries to thrive. However, the tables turned, and the West dominated the Asian nations denying them their sovereignty apart from Japan. Nonetheless, Rosling foresees a time when the East will regain its economic supremacy and overthrow the West who have been dominant all along. Rosling believes that since the Asian countries gained their sovereignty, they have made strides economically. As such, individuals who want to have a robust economic growth have now shifted their attention to the East.
