After reading this chapter, you know that the study of genomics is helping clinicians to understand better the interaction between genes and the environment. This new information and knowledge will continue to help clinicians find ways to improve health and prevent disease. How do you envision patient care will change based on genomics in 10 years, 20 years, or 50 years in the future?

The successful development of the human genome sequence can be equated to the establishment of a manual that can be used to create the body of a human being. Scientists, however, have a daunting task to comprehend the contents of this manual and get to a point where they can be in a position to piece all parts together and establish a genetic framework in pathology. There are a number of things that are bound to occur in the future in a bid to improve patient care. One of these things involves advancement in the field of medicine. Due to great individualized analysis on someone`s gene, a very powerful form of preventive medication is bound to be created (Human Genome Program (HGP), 2010).

To further belabor on the above premise it is apparent that advancement in the field of genome will lead to the ease of establishing risks emanating from future diseases that individuals are likely to suffer from by thoroughly analyzing their DNA (Human Genome Program (HGP), 2010). This is bound to make work easier for health workers who will work more confidently and comfortably with sick patients to identify the factors that are most likely to result in the maintenance of their health. This may include a change of an individual`s diet or their general lifestyle. It is also expected that by establishing the molecular level pertaining to the occurrence of critical illnesses, it should be possible to come up with a preventive measure and cure at the same time (Human Genome Program (HGP), 2010). Besides this, drugs available in the future will be more effective compared to those available currently.

Currently, there are up to 350 products in biotechnology which are being analyzed (Human Genome Program (HGP), 2010). Besides in the next 10 to 15 years, it is expected that new medicine based upon completed genome will be made available ( Lunshof et al., 2010 ). More than 10 years is required for a pharmaceutical company to conduct successful trials based on the drugs they wish to introduce in the industry, according to the regulations laid out by the food and drug administration ( Lunshof et al., 2010 ). In the near future, it is also expected that it will be possible to establish which drugs work based on certain people owing to their genetic constitution.

It is apparent from the examples above that there is bound to be a major change in the field of genomics in the future. By understanding the genetic constitution of individuals, clinicians and health workers will be at a better position to deliver medication to patients. Besides this, duration of up to a decade is required in order to come up with successful trials bound to establish the effectiveness of a medication based upon the genetic constitution of an individual. There is thus no doubt whatsoever that future advancement in the field of genomics is likely to improve the lives of individuals.
