Name/ Description of Theory  Application to Culture Change  Comparison Between the Three Theories

The Great man theory

This theory has it that people possess different attributes that set them apart from others. It is centered on two major assumptions

Leaders are born and not made.

Leaders arise when there is a great necessity for their input.

It also states that a leader with the particular desirable traits that set them apart from others beats all odds to gain power and lead others( Manning, 2012) .

The great man theory makes organizational change acceptance at the leadership level rigid and hard to achieve. While change is inevitable and requires dynamism in organizational structure, when the leader is not flexible enough to accept change, it is almost impossible for them to influence change acceptance among employees.  The great man theory does not compare with Contingency and behavioral theory in terms of how leadership traits are acquired. It assumes that leaders are born, but the other two assume that the environment influences leadership traits.

Contingency Theory

Contingency theory has it that a leader's effectiveness is based on their leadership style and suitability to the situation at hand. It is, therefore, possible to be more effective in leading during particular circumstances than in others ( Bratton, 2020) .

The effectiveness of change in leadership depends on the type of change required in the case of contingency theory. If the leader is technologically savvy and embraces diversity, for example, it is possible for technological changes or employment of individuals with dynamic cultures to be applied. On the other hand, where the leader does not possess these traits, change would be difficult to be realized.  Contingency theory has a slight similarity with behavioral theory. In both of them, leaders can change to suit particular leadership needs (Bratton, 2020) .

Behavioral Theory

Behavioral theory espouses that successful leadership is not influenced by innate characteristics but acquired behavior characteristics.

Behavioral theory best exemplifies the effectiveness of organizational cultural change. Since a leader can adopt particular behavior, they can change to accommodate the required change in an organization.  While elements of behavioral theory significantly differ from those of the great man theory, in terms of influencing change, behavioral theory and contingency theory compare in that in both, leaders can be flexible in a way that positively reinforces organizational change.
