Transformational leadership is a style that brings about positive change through inspiring, encouraging and motivating individuals. This change is made possible through the leaders setting an example of independence and ownership. There are various characteristics of this style of leadership which I believe makes it most effective for growth and goal achievement. One characteristic that I think stands out is authenticity, leaders with this style are okay with showing who they are even when it is not perfect, they also show compassion, integrity and a vision. Such a leader mentors and offers coaching to employees whilst encouraging them to make decisions and take responsibility. Another trait is this style encourages employees to develop a mindset that is based on working together to achieve common good. One person whom I think is an excellent example of a transformational leader is Dr. Martin Luther King, he challenged the way things were and inspired and encouraged people to find different ways of doing things. His use of this leadership style was the reason for change in America and what inspired many to continue his dream.

Servant leadership style is focused on placing the needs of others first. This style is effective because a leader believes that when their team members are professionally and personally fulfilled they are able to produce efficient and high quality results. Some of the traits that make up this leadership style include; empathy, awareness and commitment to growth. A servant leader is empathetic, this brings about a good understanding of the teams personal and professional needs, and makes the members feel cared for and helps them improve themselves. This style also makes a leader aware of both their own and the members’ weaknesses and strengths, information which is beneficial in promoting growth. A commitment to growth is shown through encouraging and providing the necessary skills that bring forth opportunities and development, which makes this style effective. Mother Teresa to me is the quintessential example of a servant leader. She put others needs above hers, she was a good listener, had awareness and led by example. This leadership style was effective for her because managed to encourage others to develop a relationship with God and become better people.
